How to Determine Your Shaft Flex Based On Swing Speed and Tempo

Share

We get asked a lot to recommend a golf shaft based off of a golfer’s swing speed numbers. While swing speed is an important factor in the fitting process, it’s just one component you need to find the right golf shaft for your game.

Your tempo (slow, moderate, fast) is just as important as your swing speed, and pairing the two together can help you hone in on what flex you should play in your iron and/or wood golf shaft.

As we like to say at True Temper, “It’s not how fast you swing it, it’s how you swing it fast.”

We put together these handy reference guides that pair swing speed with tempo to recommend a flex for iron and wood shaft.

Once you have the flex narrowed down, this is great information to take to your club fitter to begin the more in-depth custom fitting process that takes into account many other characteristics. Find a Performance Fitting Center in your area for a custom fitting experience.

Determining speed is obvisous but how is tempo determined and what are the limits? My tempo is 2 seconds, one up one down so what is my tempo?

Hi Ron,

General Tempo guidelines:
Less than 1 second: Fast
1.0 to 1.25 seconds: Medium
Greater than 1.25 seconds: Slow

Thanks!

The charts are interesting – I’m surprised that the speed ranges match for driver and irons. By this, is your suggestion that a golfer go with one flex stiffer in the woods than the irons? Obviously this is a generalization and folks should get fit.

Hi Matt,

Sometimes. Graphite woods being lighter and of longer weight can result in playing stiffer flex than in irons. Should always get fit to confirm.

Thanks for the question.

Thanks for the info, when I go to shaftfit.com there is no slow for swing speed. The choices are fast, moderate and deliberate. According to the general tempo guidelines I am slow and should be using A flex. Do I select deliberate tempo when getting fitted

Hi Darrell, Yes…select deliberate when you go through ShaftFit.com. Thanks!
